Val d’Isère has skidded right into the 21st century this year by launching free mountain Wi-Fi. For the very first time, skiers and riders can look up info, check in on Facebook and post snowy selfies directly from the slopes – minus the heinous data roaming costs.

Social validation and selfies aside, Val’s free mountain Wi-Fi means that communicating with friends and family while on the slopes has never been easier – or cheaper.

Val’s app

To firmly cement their arrival into the digital age, Val d’Isère also launched a competition at the start of the 2014/2015 ski season, imploring digi-geeks worldwide to come up with a brand new ski app for the resort.

Val d’Isère dubbed the project the “highest Hackathon competition in the world” and saw teams competing for EUR 100,000 worth of prizes, including lift passes, an array of Apple products and a number of “other surprises.”

The apps will be trialled and tested with Val d’Isère’s guests throughout the 2015 season, who will vote for their favourite. The winning app will then be built and launched ready for next season.

Digi-bus service

Digital pioneers in Val d’Isère haven’t stopped there. If that wasn't enough modern technology for you, they've also introduced a new digital bus service this year, providing real-time bus updates with precise waiting times for keen skiers looking to get out and about with ease.

Launched at the start of the season, the service has been devised to allow guests to spend more time on the slopes and less time hanging around waiting for transportation.

It's ironic really  all these new digital services in Val d’Isère has put us in mind of buses anyway: you wait yonks for one and then three come along at once...
