NEW YEARS SKI HOLIDAYS
New Year Ski Holiday Suggestions
The Austrian ski resort of St Anton has to be one of the country's most attractive and charming. All the buildings in and around the pedestrianised town centre are painted in pastel hues of blue, yellow, red and green which really makes it very beautiful indeed. Over the festive New Year period this is a most wonderful place to be!
St Anton's reputation precedes it and many people come here from across Europe for the superb après ski and nightlife. The Mooserwirt bar sits piste-side and welcomes thirsty skiers from around 3pm until early evening. During those hours it is simply one of the busiest and best après ski venues in Europe and over the New Year week, this is especially true! St Anton is best known for its afternoon après ski, but you will not be disappointed come the evening with the many and varied bars lining the resort centre. People looking for a boozy New Years are certainly looking in the right place.
On New Year's Eve itself the festivities commence as soon as the lifts close, if not earlier. Dancing on tables is not uncommon! After dinner in your chalet, everyone tends to head for the traffic-free resort centre where you'll wait in anticipation for the big countdown while DJs play their tunes and the champagne flows. Once the clock strikes twelve the sky fills with fireworks. But this does not signify the end of the evening's events, there will be parties and events happening in the resort's bars and clubs until the early hours of the morning.
It's not all about the après ski. St Anton is also well known for its challenging skiing, although there is still plenty of choice for beginners and intermediates. Those with less experience should head for the more gentle blues on the Rendl side. St Anton is in the Ski Arlberg area, offering access to many kilometers of runs and lots of opportunities for off-piste to keep even the most expert skiers busy.
If you're looking to visit St Anton over the New Year week with children in tow and nightlife is not the priority, it's worth bearing in mind that over in the Nasserein area it's wonderfully peaceful and perfect for families. Ski access is easy and the area has its own gondola too, so don't be put off St Anton because of its reputation as a party destination. The main resort can be a little noisy at night but if you're not a night owl you'll be able to enjoy the peaceful slopes in the mornings, particularly on New Year's Day while the partygoers nurse their hangovers until at least midday.
