Val d’Isere offers no shortage of snow-sure terrain for skiing, but that doesn’t mean you can’t mix things up, leave the skis in the chalet and have a brilliant time. Whether you’re craving an extra adrenaline rush or looking for something different to keep the kids entertained, here’s a rundown of 5 top activities (without skis) in Val d’Isere.

Ice Karting

Hop behind the wheel of a go kart and pit your wits against family and friends on an exciting snowy circuit  – after all, who doesn’t love a bit of friendly competition? The ice driving centre in La Daille is home to one of the few outdoor go karting circuits in France, and it’s certainly unique at an elevation of 1850. More info here.

Husky Sledging

Be in charge of your own team of adorable husky dogs as you sledge down forest paths and up mountain trails. Your skilled guide will take you through all the basics -“Mush” to start, “Whoa” to stop – and those keen on kicking back and taking in the views can always let someone else do the driving. For a more high-octane adventure (sans dogs, unfortunately) adrenaline junkies can hire a snowmobile and blast across the slopes and snowfields of Val after the pistes have shut for the day. You can either drive your own skidoo or share with a mate. Drivers must be 18+, however passengers can be 12 and over – in special circumstance, children aged 8 and up may be able to ride as passengers. See here for more information.

Helicopter Tours

Sit back and marvel at bird’s-eye views over Val d’Isere. Helicopter tours run daily (weather permitting) and there is no better way to take in the full Alpine atmosphere than soaring right across the peaks, glaciers and forests of the Alps. Details here.

For an even closer look at the aforementioned snow-capped mountains, holidaymakers can don a parachute and, riding tandem with an instructor, glide down from the Solaise to the bottom of the valley. The experience can be as peaceful or as thrilling as you like: float gently or spin and circle above Val d’Isere. Full details here
